Artist Wei Leng Tay works across disciplines including photography, video, and installation. She uses formal strategies in installation, the relationship between image and text, and social encounters, to consider ingrained modes of perception and representation. She also questions photography’s relationship to contemporary society through its materiality. An ongoing topical focus is movement and migration, in relation to ideas of otherness, difference and identity.
Recent solo and group exhibitions have been presented with institutions such as University of Sydney Verge Gallery (Australia) and WMA Space (Hong Kong) (Abridge 2021), NUS Museum Singapore (Discordant Symmetries 2010-2011, Crossings 2018-2019), Australian National University CIW Gallery (The Other Shore, 2016), STORAGE Bangkok (2024), National Gallery Singapore (2022-23), Fotomuseum Winterthur and Fotostiftung Schweiz (2023), Cemeti Art House, Indonesia (2016), Daegu Photo Biennale (S. Korea, 2016), ARTER Space for Art, Turkey (2014), Para Site Art Space Hong Kong (2009, 10, 12), and Asian Art Biennial (Taiwan, 2013). She has been invited to lecture, speak on panels, or conduct workshops with institutions including at the Singapore Art Museum (2021), Stanford Art Institute (2017), National Portrait Gallery Australia (2016), and Yale University (2015).
Tay has artist collaborations - Progressive Disintegrations (Chua Chye Teck, Marc Gloede, Hilmi Johandi, Wei Leng Tay, Singapore, 2020-present) and Sightlines (Michelle Wong, Wei Leng Tay, C&G Artpartment, Lam Wing Sze, Kin Choi Lam, South Ho, Hong Kong, 2016-2019) where members work through ideas of communality and authorship through art and exhibition making. Her research has been supported by academic institutions such as the Australian National University (for The Other Shore), University of Sydney (Abridge) and through residencies with organisations such as Vasl Artists' Association, Pakistan, Nanyang Technological University Centre for Contemporary Art (NTU CCA) Singapore, and Objectifs Centre for Photography and Filmmaking, Singapore.
Her works are part of collections including those of the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Art, Singapore Art Museum, Mount Holyoke College Art Museum, NUS Museum and Chau Chak Wing Museum University of Sydney. She has received awards such as the WMA prize (Hong Kong, 2017), NAC Singapore’s Art Creation Grant, and was a Poynter Fellow with Yale University (2015). Her projects have been the subject of articles in peer-reviewed journals and publications such as Southeast of Now, Trans Asia Photography (TAP) Review, and ArtAsiaPacific. Tay holds a BSc (Biology) from McGill University, Canada, and an MFA from the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts, Bard College, USA. She is currently Lecturer of Art Practice at Yale-NUS College, Singapore.
Her practice is informed by her work in education and the media industry as lecturer, photographer, and photo editor.
